I’m two weeks into a six week stay the city of Antigua, not the Island.
My husband discovered The Spanish Academy called CSA a few years ago and makes two to three trips a year for classes. This is my fourth trip with him. While here, we live with a host family, so for me, it is a writing retreat—no cooking, cleaning, or distractions from the television.
I’ve spent these first weeks researching a source often quoted by early Schally/Shally family collaborators on the former RootsWeb discussion site. Unfortunately, I did not discover the identity of Pfarrer Kormann. However, I did figure out a way to share both the German and English translation of his “Paper” from my Ancestry account into my article, The Swiss Challie Become German Shally. When I posted the original, I had no idea it would become the main online “source” mentioning the Kormann Paper. Therefore, providing them on a permanent website for future generations was a must.
I’m looking forward to using my remaining time in this beautiful location to focus on the stories in my mind.
I want to write a Narrative Nonfiction book about Mary Shirley McGuire, but I also have a whole Cozy Mystery series waiting—and a new character wanting to tell Maddy May what she knows. I can’t use her real name but she knows many languages and poses as a vender in the park. She told me she knows many secrets. I can’t wait to find out what they are.
Here is one the writing spaces in our host family’s home. Imagine the lite morning breeze blowing in through those sliding doors. Despite the noisy traffic on the other side of the rooftops, I can hear the birds saying good morning.
Our host family’s balcony is also a great place to view Antigua’s Volcano of Fire. I happened to catch its morning greeting before rain clouds moved in. This is farther away than it looks. One evening, I hope to catch sight of its glow.
