August 8, 1776, Mary Shirley anticipates seeing William McGuire at Cooks Fort as she and her family arrive back in the Greenbrier Valley of western Virginia in August. But if he has plans to return to Kentucky, it will be without her. She can never return—the cost would be too great. But the walls of the fort can’t keep Mary safe and the walls around her heart threaten her future.
William McGuire desires to raise fast horses on the fertile Kentucky land. He’s not sure if he can convince Mary to return as his wife someday. In the mean time, he has a dangerous scout trip ahead of him.
